A short spoken walk-through of this drill.
Goal
Keep possession by creating passing triangles and using the neutrals to move away from pressure.
Setup
Mark a 20 x 15-yard grid with spare balls around the edge. Place two teams of 4 and one neutral inside, with one outside neutral on each of two opposite sides.
Drill Instructions
Play possession: all 3 neutrals support the team with the ball; outside neutrals move along their side but cannot enter or be tackled. Complete 10 consecutive passes for 1 point, including passes involving neutrals, then keep playing with a new count; reset the count on a turnover or ball out, with the other team restarting after a ball out. Play 3 x 3-minute rounds with short coaching breaks, rotating neutrals between rounds.
Coach Tip
“Look before it arrives, receive side-on, then move to help again!” Encourage players to find the far-side neutral when one side becomes crowded.
Avoid
Do not crowd the ball or hide behind a defender. Avoid forcing a forward pass when a safe support pass can open a new angle.
Adjust on the fly
Make it easier
Expand the grid to 25 x 20 yards and score after 5 consecutive passes. Allow unlimited touches for everyone.
Make it harder
Limit neutrals to 2 touches. Require both outside neutrals to receive during the 10-pass sequence for the point to count.
