A short spoken walk-through of this drill.
Goal
Execute the correct technical touch or turn immediately based on the verbal information provided by the passer.
Setup
Place two cones 10 yards apart. Player A (the receiver) and Player B (the passer) stand at opposite cones.
Drill Instructions
1. Player B passes to Player A. 2. Along with the pass, Player B must shout one of four commands: 'Turn', 'Drop', 'Time', or 'Man On'. 3. Player A must react immediately based on the command given (turn with the ball, play a drop pass, trap the ball, prepare to shield a defender). 4. After 5 reps, switch roles so the receiver becomes the communicator.
Coach Tip
The information should arrive before the ball does; think 'Pass-Shout-Receive'.
Avoid
Whispering or waiting until the player has already touched the ball to give the command.
Adjust on the fly
Make it easier
Reduce the options to just two commands (e.g., 'Turn' or 'Time') until the players are comfortable.
Make it harder
Add a passive defender who moves toward Player A to force them to check their shoulder before hearing the command.
