A short spoken walk-through of this drill.
Goal
Keep the ball protected and under control for the full 5 seconds before delivering a clean, accurate pass back to the starting player.
Setup
Create a 10x10 yard grid. Player A stands on one side with the ball. Player B (attacker) and Player C (defender) start on the opposite side.
Drill Instructions
1. Player B checks toward the center of the grid to receive a pass from Player A. 2. Player C follows closely to apply pressure from behind. 3. Player B receives the ball and must shield it for 3-5 seconds using their body and arms for balance. 4. After holding off the defender, Player B plays a 'drop pass' back to Player A. 5. Rotate roles after 3 repetitions.
Coach Tip
Get low! Bend your knees and use your arm (arm-bar) to feel where the defender is moving without grabbing them.
Avoid
Standing flat-footed or keeping the ball directly under your feet where the defender can reach around and poke it.
