Coach Carter
A short spoken walk-through of this drill.
Goal
Move the two balls through both identical sequences with one or two touches, ensuring the ball never stops moving.
Setup
Set up two identical patterns side-by-side. Use cones to mark two sets of five positions: Left CB (A), Right CB (B), Holding CM (C), Right Wingback (D), and Striker (E).
Extra players line up in the positions shown in the drill illustration (the two LCB positions).
Drill Instructions
Sequence 1: 1. Player A (LCB) passes to Player B (RCB). 2. Player B plays into the Right Wingback (Player D). 3. Player D turns or plays a leading pass to the CM in space (Player C). 4. Player C passes to the Striker (Player E). 5. Players follow their pass to the next station.
Sequence 2 using a second ball goes in the opposite direction using the same pass sequence
Switch directions, starting with the RCBs passing to the LCBs half-way through.
Coach Tip
Focus on the weight of the pass to Player C—it should be into the space ahead of them, not at their feet.
Avoid
Standing flat-footed while waiting for the ball; every player should take a small prep-step before receiving and be checking away and then back to meet the ball.
Adjust on the fly
Make it easier
Reduce the distance between cones and allow unlimited touches to focus on the pattern sequence.
Make it harder
Require one-touch passing only and add a 'shadow' defender who tries to intercept the pass to the Wingback.
