A short spoken walk-through of this drill.
Goal
Score goals by utilizing the 'free' player to bypass defenders and maintain possession.
Setup
Mark a standard small-sided pitch with two goals. Divide players into two even teams (e.g., 3v3 or 4v4) and designate one player as the 'Neutral' in a bright pinnie.
Drill Instructions
1. Play a standard scrimmage. 2. The Neutral player always plays for the team in possession of the ball. 3. If the defending team wins the ball, the Neutral immediately becomes their teammate. 4. Encourage teams to find the Neutral player to create 2v1 or 3v2 situations.
Coach Tip
Remind players that the Neutral is always 'open'—keep your head up to find the extra man quickly.
Avoid
The Neutral player standing still; they must move constantly to bridge the gap between teammates.
